ISSUES is delighted to present Militza Monteverde Burrau’s second solo show at the gallery. Titled Kissing The Shuttle, the show consists of mouth-blown glass sculptures hung from wooden pegs, paintings inspired by schematic instructions on how to assemble a loom, and a group of paintings resembling faces made from (painted) buttons and spools of thread. ”Kissing the shuttle“ is a term used in the late 19th century, to describe a process by which weavers in the textile factories used their mouths to pull thread through the eye of a shuttle . The same shuttles were used by many weavers and the women in the factories were accused of spreading disease by “kissing the shuttle”. In reality, however, the deadly diseases were a result of their poor working conditions and the swirling dust.
In this exhibition, Militza, who has a background as a textile artist, has chosen to portray objects related to the textile industry to create a drama that reflects on her own working conditions as an artist.
Hanna Johansson, author of novels Antiken and Body Double, as well as Svenska Dagbladet's arts editor, has written the exhibition text.
