Emanuel’s practice is rooted in painting, sculpture, writing, installation art, and in recent years, filmmaking and work outside the studio. Influenced by the urban landscape of LA, and the wilderness beyond in the American West, Emanuel’s work explores the relationship between architectures from historical and contemporary civilizations and their assimilation and affect on cinema and popular culture. Our perception of time and its manifestations has been a central theme in Emanuel's projects.
Emanuel Röhss b. 1985 Gothenburg, Sweden. Lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He studied at the National College of Art & Design in Dublin, Valand Academy in Gothenburg, and the Royal College of Arts in London, where he received an MA in Fine Arts. He has exhibited extensively both in Sweden and internationally. Selected solo and duo shows include Historical Figures at ISSUES, Stockholm, Sweden (2023), Times Past And Future at Galerie Nordenhake Focus Stockholm (2022), Belly of the Beast at Gothenburg Museum of Art, Gothenburg (2021-2022); Out of Joint at 818 N Spring Street, Los Angeles, USA (2018); End Frames at Coma Gallery, Sydney, Australia (2017) and Mad Horizon (with John Skoog) at Index: The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Stockholm (2016).
Selected group exhibitions include Downtown Issues II at ISSUES, Stockholm (2023); 100 Sculptures at NO Gallery, Los Angeles (2020); Installations In The Park at Thielska Galleriet, Stockholm (2018) and Swedish Art: Now! at Sven Harrys Konstmuseum, Stockholm (2016).
In 2021, Emanuel received the Sten A Ohlsson Foundation for Research and Culture Visual Art Award. His work is represented in collections such as Kistefoss Collection, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Gullringsbo konstsamling and Stenastiftelsens konstsamling, to name but a few.
